Some news from Bretagne, XXII

Well it is about time I come back with various news on my home region of Brittany or Bretagne or Breizh (Breton). This is beautiful region tuck away in a huge peninsula and many times overlook by visitors but is a huge load of fun to visit; not the least to live. Today is a cloudy and sunny day at the time, 14C or about 60F and not raining.

At the wonderful Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper (fine arts museum) you have a great exposition until October 2nd of “Autoportraits du Musée d’Orsay” . Many self portraits of the famous (Courbet, Carpeaux,Redon, Gauguin, Cézanne, and Van Gogh  from 1848 to 1914 on loan from the Orsay museum in Paris.

At the Cité de la Voile-Eric Tabarly in Lorient there is a new space open name “Ton Corps Super Heros” until August 14 on a space of 450 m2; you see this interactive exposition to test your body around three themes , Measurements, Movements, and Mind. Admission for the space is 6€ ,cité and expo for 15€.

Before I forget go to La Casa Varadero in Lorient, (besides the name it is an Italian pizzeria ::) ,where not only you will have a great meal and tropical drinks but ,also, a great art exposition with a new interior decoration. The expo is “Pachyderm”; humorous scene from the Elephant. Every day except Sunday midday. IN the week service runs to 22h and weekends 23h30.

Go to Le Galion, 2 Rue Florian Laporte(port du commerce) Lorient to see concerts and good food in a bar concerts theme. Here events are held such as the night of poker, film projections, and concerts . Open Tuesdays to Thursdays from 7h to 21h, Fridays to 01h, and Saturdays from 17h30 to 01h. You are looking for local burgers well do not mention the popular chains, and hit the local scene with Speed Burger, 125 rue Paul Guieysse, Lorient. you have the Red cheeseburger or the Double Red Cheeseburger ::)  Open 7/7 Mondays to SAturdays from 11h30 to 14h and then 18h30 to 22h30; Sundays 12h to 14h30 and18h30 to 22h30.  And already 50 restos in France,but not yet in Paris  :

And go to the Manoir de Kernault, a historical house in Brittany. Here from special effects and illuminations you will be shown the Celtic mythology to the fantasy and the leyend of Arthur of virtual worlds. One of the highlights of visiting our region are the megaliths stones going back 6000 years. Some of the most popular ones are the Cairns de Gavrinis at Larmor Baden ,where until November 1st you can discover a funerary architecture in dry stone where a sepulchre of our ancestors lies. See ancients drawings on the walls such as instruments that still mistified the experts as to what they are. admission from 8€. Info in French;

And the one at Petit Mont, at Arzon. same time but only 7€, the site is over 6000 years old, and it also has a bunker from 1942! The stones are at 36 meters above sea level and you can have a wonderful view over the islands of Belle-île,Houat, Hoëdic,the pointe de Kerpenhir, Locmariaquer but ,also, Gavrinis and the Gulf of Morbihan. It is the site of  a great Roman battle against the local Vénétes and strategic point in WWII.

At the château Gaillard in Vannes, the musée d’Histoire et d’Archéologie, you have until November 2nd the Exposition “Vannes au moyen age”  or Vannes in the Middle Ages; how it was back then with objects from the period. admission 4,50€. In French :

In the Galerie du Cloître (gallery of the cloister) in Saint Anne d’Auray back of the Basilica of Sainte Anne d’Auray you have until November 2nd, “Empreintes du Sacré” or sacred footprints; with over 50 photos of writer-traveler Ferrante Ferranti showing here the passage of the Holy Cross on the body and soul.  More in French:

At the wonderful  Domaine de Kerguéhennec in Bignan you have until November 6th the expo “Paysages Contemporains”. Celebrating the 30 years of sculptures in the park. Passage in the diversity of its dimensions. More in French:

Further Northwest on the area by Le Faouët in the Musée du Faouët at Le Faouêt you have the exposition “La Fête vue par les Peintres en Bretagne” until October 9th. In the 19C and 20C , Brittany had a resurgence of painters showing the region in its many faces including dances, religious pardons, music, breton wrestling, marriages, circus, and country fairs.

As the word is to have an airport bigger by Notre Dame des Landes away from Nantes, we have others such as Rennes and Dinard, but in Brest it is growing with flights to Barcelona (Vueling), Birmingham (Flybe), Perpignan (Chalair) , Southampton (Flybe), and Toulouse (Volotea). The big one is coming from August 4 tot he 14 2016 at the 46th Festival Interceltique de Lorient. This year the invited country is Australia!  You will have the Breizh stade open Sunday Aug 7 from 15h, at the Auditourim du Cercle Saint Louis films projections Monday to Fridays, The Palais des Congrés master class of gaita, fiddle and accordéon. From 22h the Quai des Pays Celtes showcasing the different celtique nations such as Arcadia, Ireland, Asturias etc.the Salle Carnot from 21h30 Fez Noz party traditional breton celtic. The Quai de Bretagne from 22h concerts et festou noz parties on different days and guest artists kitchen music, kenavo an distro Bagad de Lorient etc etc. You can buy tickets in advance at Espace Nayel shopping center city center Lorient, Tourist offices, official stores in the webpage etc. More here in French :

A nice family ride in the islands of the Gulf of Morbihan by a father and son team in the Les Vedettes d’Angélus. And as we are great fans of seafood/fish and we are in the right spot for them in France, I have to recommend one of my finds, La Grande Poissonnerie de Keroman, 5 rue B Frachon, Rondpoint Base des Sous-marins, Lorient. Just before getting to the museum of submarines in the harbor. You can take away already made platters from 10€ and up.  Absolutely everything fresh from the local catch and friendly knowledable service from the experts! open Tuesdays to Fridays from 8h30-13h and 15h15-19h30, Saturdays continuos from 8h30 to 19h30.

Enjoy the region, it’s a blast !! and now ready for the’ football match France vs Iceland we need to be prepare for everything!
